Date: July 12th, 2023, 14:00 CET

Where: ETZ E6

Abstract:

Our future society is data-driven, enabled by near-instant and unlimited wireless connectivity. Ultra-dense communications and sensing will stretch the capacity of existing data and computing infrastructures, requiring us to manage massive volumes of locally produced data by distributing computations over a device-edge-cloud computing continuum. Moreover, AI/ML models need novel distributed paradigms that are suitable for the computing continuum and take advantage of advanced 6G networks to increase latency, privacy and data locality. In this talk, we will take look at the 6G Flagship research program of the University of Oulu, one of the leading global 6G research initiatives, and focus on recent studies and future challenges on distributed intelligence in the computing continuum.

Speaker Bio:

Lauri Lovén, D.Sc.(Tech), is a senior member of IEEE and a postdoctoral researcher in the 6G Flagship research program at the Center for Ubiquitous Computing (UBICOMP), University of Oulu, in Finland, where he coordinates the Distributed Intelligence strategic research area. He received his D.Sc. at the university of Oulu in 2021, and was with the Distributed Systems Group, TU Wien in 2022. His current research concentrates on edge intelligence, and on the orchestration of resources as well as distributed learning and decision-making in the computing continuum. He has co-authored 2 patents and ca. 40 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals, conferences, and workshops.
